Day 1 of #365healthydays
Water water everywhere…so why are you not drinking it ?! Especially this time of year when it’s chilly outside (and a cocktail seems much more tempting than a glass of H2O!) it can be hard to drink as much water as we should, but it is so important to keep drinking as much water as ever.
The benefits of drinking more water are frequently touted and we know lots of them – being properly hydrated increases energy and relieves fatigue, helps to promote weight loss, aids in flushing toxins from the body, improves your skin complexion, boosts your immune system and your digestive system, prevents cramps and keeps your muscles and fascia well hydrated helps to prevent stiffness/soreness which may lead to tears, water is a natural headache remedy … there are a million more benefits and you have probably felt them all if you have committed to drinking more water in the past.

The question is – how much water do you really need to drink? The answer, like everything, depends on the individual, their activity level, their body composition etc. I think 3 litres of water per day is a good rule of thumb. I start every day by drinking a pint of water (which is about 500mls) – I have it ready on my bedside table and drink it before I have even opened my eyes, before I have a chance to think about what I’m doing! If you are sitting at a desk all day, I think 2 litres during the day is a manageable amount (don’t underestimate how dehydrating offices can be!) and then your last 500mls in the evening after work, or during your workout.

It is easy to jazz up your water with lemon, lime, orange, mint, cucumber. People often ask me about the practicalities of drinking lots of water – what about having to go to the loo all the time? Well I say 2 benefits in 1 there – we all know we should be taking desk breaks and having to go to the loo is guaranteed to get you up and moving! It may seem like a challenge at the start to drink that much water but commit to it one day at a time and it will become second nature and you will never want to go back to feeling sluggish again because of dehydration.
So do it! Start with the pint in the morning, manage at least 1 litre at your desk and another pint of water in the evening and build up to more. Make this small change and I promise you will feel incredible
