Day 14 of #365healthydays at Flex in the City and we are all about your fabulous self today!
😁 I know it is an easy thing to say (and trust me, I most certainly do not look in the mirror every day and high five myself
😂) but if we could stop looking at our bodies and thinking ‘eugh, if I could just change this, and get rid of that, move that to the left and this to the right….’ and started looking at our bodies and thinking ‘wowsers, you just got me through another barre class. Actually not just a barre class, but a barre class with weights and red balls and double tubes. You’re a legend!’ we might just be on the way to ending the #bodybattle . Lots of clients have said to me ‘oh I’m not strong enough/fit enough/flexible enough to do Pilates or Barre’. We fear that people will look at us, judge us, think ‘what is she doing here’. Well hang on a sec – have you ever thought that about anyone else in a class? I know I haven’t. I know I have thought ‘dear god, how is it that I am dying and that girl’s ponytail is still swinging happily side to side like she’s on a stroll for icecream’
😂Any body that allows you to workout is a great body. We need to think about exercise not as a punishment but as something that we get to do. I know this sounds a bit like when you didn’t want to go to school and your mom responded with ‘well there are poor children all over the world who would only love to be going to school but they have to walk 20 miles a day bare foot for water. Now get down those stairs!’ but really, remember when you were little and you played chasing or rounders and you didn’t think ‘aww gotta get my cardio done’ and red rover or skipping definitely did not make you think ‘noooo moooore HIIT’
😂 exercise was disguised in games and it was something we enjoyed – if you hate the gym, don’t go! Find a class that you love, a studio with a great atmoshere that you find welcoming and going to workout isn’t a chore. Walk the dog listening to your favourite music or a podcast or audiobook, or even better walk or run with a friend so it’s a catch-up disguised as exercise. If you enjoyed Irish dancing, go to a ceili/set dancing session ( I do these on and off and you will walk in and think ‘oh god, these people are ancient’ and then two minutes in you’ll be thinking ‘how is this 60 year old like twinkletoes and I am struggling to breathe’
😂). Join a tennis club or a couch-to-5km group. The main point is to find something you don’t dread doing, something that isn’t a punishment for eating something you ‘shouldn’t have’, something you actually enjoy so that you will stick to it. And know that where ever you are at the moment, whatever shape you are in, just start. Don’t be afraid to start, grab yourself and get going, treat your body the way you would your child – no crap food, lots of exercise and fresh air and loads of love. See you in the studio soon
😊
