I have always been fascinated by the human body and how it functions – when I was 5 and my little brother was born, I made my Mom bring home some of the doctors’ scrubs from the hospital and I told everyone that I was going to be a gynaecologist. Or failing that, a paediatrician. I had only the vaguest of ideas as what either job actually entailed, but I loved the words! In the end, it was my love of language that I followed and I went on to read Applied Languages, with French, German and Spanish at the University of Limerick. All throughout my studies both at school in Cork, and later in college, exercise played a key role. Running was a big part of my life, and I raced in competitions nationally and at European level. Irish dancing was an even bigger feature of my life, from the age of four to my early twenties and I toured with dance companies, performing around the world. Pilates was always incorporated into my training, particularly after an ankle injury in 2009 and I loved how strong and flexible it made me feel, and how it changed my body!

After graduation, I left Ireland to work in Berlin, and then Paris and the busy corporate environment meant a big change. Long hours, lots of international travel, missing meals then eating on the run, exercise quickly fell off my list of priorities and I suffered for it! The poor eating and hectic lifestyle began to show on my face with huge outbreaks and my body composition definitely changed for the worse! I also started to notice that my sleep was disrupted and that the energy slumps were becoming more and more frequent. I decided that I was way too young to be feeling this old and having always been active, I turned back to exercise. I discovered Reformer Pilates and Barre and I was so impressed with the impact that it had on my body and mind that I decided to retrain and turn my passion into a career.

I trained in Matwork and Reformer Pilates, and the Barre method in the UK. I then decided to go further and pursue a health science degree in physical therapy.

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity. During my time in the corporate world, I saw too many people prioritise work over themselves, and not only did their bodies suffer, but their work did also. They became tired and sluggish, caving into whatever sugary fix they could find to keep their eyes open at 3pm. When they did find time to exercise, they tried to pack a 2 hour workout into 15 minutes. I firmly believe that you should exercise to stimulate, not to annihilate! Pilates is intelligent exercise, designed to allow you to get the best out of your body, to function optimally in a busy, modern world. Pilates is not about quick fixes, Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were we. With regular practice, using the Pilates method of intelligent exercise, you can achieve a balanced body and mind and a surge in self-confidence isn’t far behind.
