Flex Star Spotlight : Feature Client

Mariko has been taking classes at Flex in the City since June 2016 and has been a regular Flexer since, clocking up a whopping 257 classes of Barre and Reformer!

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days are always quite hectic. I usually jump out of bed, rush to work and have my breakfast at my desk. I work in the Payments Department of a multinational specializing in consumer technology and we can be quite busy. Every day is different and something unexpected can happen at any time. I love the rush and thrill of it, but it can also be rather stressful. Since I’m sitting down most of the day I always try to go for a walk during lunch. But I felt that my body needed something more than that, so that’s why I started taking classes at Flex in the City.

How long have you been taking classes at Flex in the City?

I had my first private session in June 2016 with Julette. I’ve danced for most of my life so my ankles have really taken a hit from that. Even now, years after I stopped dancing, they’re still a weak spot. Julette was amazing in working with that and showed me how all movements could be adjusted to suit my personal needs. I had my first Reformer class shortly after and I’ve been taking classes at Flex ever since.

What’s your favourite part a class?

That would be the entire class. Both the Reformer & Barre classes allow me to switch off from my hectic life for about an hour and I always feel renewed afterwards. It’s that bit of me-time that everyone needs. I also love how engaged & supportive both Julette & Miranda are. The girls are amazing instructors and motivate me to keep going with that tuck & pulse just a little longer.

What’s the biggest change you have noticed from taking Pilates/Barre classes?

I’ve become a lot stronger both physically and mentally. It’s strange how Pilates can affect your mental wellbeing, but after each class I feel proud of myself. I’ve never been the person to say ‘good job’ to myself, so for me to feel proud is a bit of a victory. And the fact that my tummy has never been as flat as it is now, is a big bonus!

What’s your favourite way to relax?

I’m a real book lover and I have a huge collection of books. Especially in autumn and winter, when the  temperatures drop, I love to snuggle up on the couch with a good book, a blanket and a hot chocolate.
